A Message from David B. Johnson, Vice Provost of Enrollment Management
Campus Partners,

As summer winds down and we change our focus to the next school year, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your hard work in building this year’s incoming class. Due in no small part to your efforts, the 2017 freshman class is poised to be one of the largest, smartest, and most diverse classes ever to enter IU.

As we welcome these students, we’ll be introducing some exciting new events and programs. The Office of First Year Experience Programs will be unveiling its newly extended Experience IU programming, which provides activities and support for students moving to IU prior to the official August 16 opening day. While FYE already curates Experience IU events all year long, this new pre-Welcome Week component gives early move-in students additional opportunities to acclimate to IU Bloomington—and allows RPS to manage the move-in process more efficiently than ever.

Some other new developments will affect incoming and current students alike. As part of IU’s multiphase renovation process, a number of classrooms in Ballantine Hall will be under construction during the upcoming school year. These changes will ultimately improve our students’ experience through modernized heating and cooling systems, updated plumbing, and more accessible learning spaces. The construction does, of course, pose a challenge to course and event scheduling. The Registrar’s team has shown great adaptability and determination in securing alternatives to the closed Ballantine rooms.

While official numbers for the 2017 incoming freshman class won’t be released until later this month, we know that more Indiana high school graduates will be beginning their college career at IU Bloomington than on any other college campus in the world. We also know that it will be one of the largest freshman classes IU has ever seen—and with an increase in academic quality. Furthermore, this class is projected to be the most ethnically, geographically, and socioeconomically diverse IU class ever. So let’s all reflect on what we’ve accomplished in bringing this record-setting class to IU.

I plan to be out on campus to welcome students and their families during Move-In Days (August 13–16) and Welcome Week (August 16–20), and I invite you all to get out there as well to help greet and guide the incoming class. I especially encourage you to attend the Freshman Induction Ceremony and CultureFest. These are the moments when we get to meet the students who make our work so important.

Thank you for all you do for IU Bloomington.

Best,
