Welcome to the first edition of OEM Updates, a new bi-monthly enewsletter that will showcase your work, share what’s happening within OEM and on campus, and remind us what we’ve accomplished.

A Message from David
OEM Colleagues,

I would like to take a moment and update you on a few strategic initiatives around OEM. First of all, I am happy to announce that we have signed a contract with our new customer relationship management (CRM) partner, Slate. Slate will replace the BeIU and FamilyIU instances of Connect. We are excited to move forward with the project and are ready to begin our implementation process.

We are in the middle of yield season and our enrollment of the freshman class of 2017 is shaping up nicely. As we expected with the introduction of the Common and Coalition Apps, we’ve seen an over 20% increase in applications. And although it’s early, deposits and reservations are up as well. As a reminder, the beginner class goal this year is 7,750 students.

On March 28, we held our last scholarship event of the season. From Indianapolis to South Florida to Texas, we saw and connected with students excited to make Indiana University Bloomington their next home. This year we saw a 7% increase in student attendees and, to date, 49% of attendees have paid their deposit.

Red Carpet Days are wrapping up! The last Red Carpet Days are April 24 and 28. This is just one of the many events, which are projected to welcome nearly 50,000 visitors this year and would mark a new record for OEM!

In helping keep IU Bloomington an affordable college experience, the Office of Student Financial Assistance team has packaged over 17,000 students, exceeding packages from last year by more than 4,000.

And there’s more to come. Our work is never done, but let’s celebrate when we can. This newsletter provides you an outlet to highlight a project or team member. Please tell us what or who makes you proud and we’ll place it in the Shout Out section.

Thank you for all you do for OEM.

Shout Out!

Our staff members are continually winning awards, presenting at conferences, leading and teaching others, and are just being awesome at their jobs. Here are just a few recent happenings.

  • Lily Oyarzun, Assistant Director, FYE, recently won the “Outstanding New Professional” award at the regional Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention for Higher Education conference. This award recognizes one new orientation, retentions, and transition professional for contributions to their campus orientation program, student success, creativity, and outstanding abilities. Congratulations Lily!
  • Bridgett Milner, Senior Associate Director, and Doug Anderson, Director of Strategic Planning and Research, won an award for Best Presentation at the INAIR 2016 Conference. Bridgett starred in a recent Tableau video and because of her expertise (and willingness to be a superstar) was interviewed by University Business about student data analytics.
  • Terry Knaus, Senior Associate Director, Admissions, will serve as chair of the NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) Professional Development Committee. His two year term will begin this fall at the Boston national conference. Terry, we know you will represent us well!
  • Special thanks to Mimi Hubbard, Brittany Krieble, Megan Walton, Sarah Nagy, AT Bossenger, Jeni Waters, Katelyn Drudge, Cory Gleyze, and Maria Santa for their quick thinking and planning for IU Day 2017. It’s not easy to pull off an event, video, and social media plan in six weeks and you all did!
  • Mark McConahay, Associate Vice Provost and Registrar, received AACRAO's (American Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers) 2017 Thomas Bilger Award. The award honors a member’s consistent vision, service, and leadership in AACRAO. Congratulations Mark! We know it was well deserved.
  • Jessa Trimble, Associate Director, FYE, was selected to be one of the state representatives, as part of the Regional Leadership structure for NODA. Congrats Jessa!
  • And there's more news from NODA! Juanita Ariza, Markie Pasternak, and Chase Wilson, FYE’s Graduate Interns, won the Regional Showcase at the NODA Region 7 Conference. Winners of this award have the opportunity to present during the National NODA Conference in the fall.

Have a shout out of your own? Tell us about it!

In Case You Missed It
in case you missed it
  • Orientation Registration is Live! It’s still early, but reservations are up! Close to 4,000 students have already signed up for new student orientation. Students may register for orientation via the First Year Experience website . New this year: After a successful pilot program in 2016, we will be pre-enrolling even more new students in 1-2 relevant courses. This will help alleviate concerns about students having difficulty getting classes later in the new student orientation program. Even students who come at the end of the summer will have a relevant course and full class load.
  • In early March, the IRS Data Retrieval tool on the FAFSA was taken down citing security concerns. Since students needed to complete this section of the FAFSA manually, the new IU Bloomington priority date was extended to April 15.
  • The Provost’s State of the Campus took place on March 7. If you missed it, you can still read the transcript or read the highlights.
