Welcome to the second edition of OEM Updates, a new bi-monthly newsletter that will showcase your work, share what’s happening within OEM and on campus, and remind us what we’ve accomplished.

A Message from David
OEM Colleagues,

Most of the students have left Bloomington for the summer, but our work keeps going in preparation for what could possibly be, one of the largest and most academically qualified and diverse classes to date. But, more on that later.

Let me first thank you for making this year’s staff retreat one of the best yet. I enjoyed being able to showcase your accomplishments over the last year and the connections we’ve made across OEM and the campus. Jim Cole brought a research focus to the day and introduced us to the latest trends and student profiles from NSSE and BCSSE surveys. We will continue to dig into the research and look to improve an already strong First Year Experience Program.

And speaking of FYE, orientation is upon us. The FYE staff, along with the over 50 person OTeam, have moved into the Union Street building and have started welcoming our students and families to campus. The two day program has seen a number of changes this year so please take a moment and review them below.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy these photos from the staff retreat. Please feel free to download and share with your friends and family.

Thank you for all you do for OEM.

Shout Out!
shout out

Our staff is continually winning awards, presenting at conferences, leading and teaching others, and are just being awesome at their jobs. Here are just a few recent happenings.

  • Congrats to our fiscal officers and others for a successful submission of the fiscal year 2018 budget. Your hard work and long hours (even over Memorial Day weekend!) are much appreciated. We’re looking at you, Katie Natalie, Maureen Potter, Amy Hines, Samaria Warsaw, Sally Knight, Karen Livingston, Chera Finkbiner, Brandy Gruner, and Mercedes Randall.
  • Our Scholarships and Admissions teams spent the month of May traveling the state of Indiana to congratulate 272 incoming Hoosiers at senior award events and honor programs at 42 different high schools. BIG SHOUT OUT to Ben Agan and Morgan Horstman in Scholarships for their hard work in planning and organizing this outreach effort.
  • It takes a team to put on the staff retreat every year. And you all really outdid yourselves this year. Can we have baked potatoes and shrimp again next year?? Thank you Nancy Brooks, Cherice Fuller, Gene Harrawood, Amy Hines, Melissa Myers, Katie Natalie, Jessica Parry, Maria Santa, Tana Sorrells, Stephanie Stephenson, Sacha Thieme, and Jeni Waters!
  • Building off the OEM retreat, the Admissions team held their annual retreat in early June. During the three day event, the admissions staff engaged in personal and professional development activities, participated in team building exercises, celebrated successes, established goals, and received important programmatic updates from our academic schools and program offices. Special thanks to Krystle Carcaterra, Cherrice Fuller, Khala Granville, Brandy Gruner, Wynne Haralovich, Emily Jackson, Olivia Russell, Kelly Waggoner, and Jeni Waters for pulling it all together.
  • Congrats to Marklee Tinch and Megan VanPelt, both in the Office of Student Financial Assistance, for completing the Excellence Training Certification program this spring!

Have a shout out of your own? Tell us about it!

In Case You Missed It
in case you missed it
  • In April President Adam W. Herbert visited the Bloomington campus and met with about 50 Herbert Presidential Scholars. While Dr. Herbert was here he also said hello and met a few prospective HPS students who were on campus for a Preview Day. It was wonderful for students and OEM staff to sit down with Dr. Herbert and listen to stories about his time at IU.
  • The red carpet has been rolled up and put away for the year. 20 Red Carpet Days ran from February through April. The premiere on-campus experience for prospective freshmen allowed students to learn the IU fight song, take a campus tour, learn more about their intended academic program, and add personalized experiences to their day. Experiences included taking a residence hall tour, attending financial aid sessions, and getting career services information. To date, over 70% of the 2,727 students who attended a RCD have declared their intent to enroll on campus this fall.
  • There’s an app for that. No really. There is. Make sure to check out FYE’s new app. This is an update from last year’s app so make sure to get the new version! The app helps students stay informed of happenings from New Student Orientation to Welcome Week through the rest of the Experience IU programs.
  • There are a variety of new additions to the New Student Orientation program this summer. Here are a few of our favorites:
    • Incorporated the “IU is Home” campaign;
    • Added a way for students to give access to parents to view the FYE confirmation page, to do list, and to receive emails;
    • Created electronic check-in (no more paper!);
    • And, students are able to confirm their majors.

By the Numbers:

Looking good fall 2017 class. While the jury is still out, we will most likely have the largest and most academically qualified and diverse class to date. Here a quick snapshot of where we are:

  • Deposits are up 4% from last year
  • Reservations are up 3% from last year
  • Mean SAT is up 11 points from last year (based on reservations)
  • Diversity is up 1% over last year (based on reservations)

  • Class of 2021. In August we’ll publically celebrate the fall 2017 beginner class. Planning is already underway for how we want to roll out this goal breaking class. More to come!
  • Questions galore. The months of June, July, August, and September represent the busiest time of the year for Student Central. In 2016 more than 42% of the total contacts for the entire year occurred during this time period and in 2015 this percentage exceeded 49%. Big thanks to Student Central staff who helped train 20 new part-time hourly staff to work in the Student Central call center. These part-time staff will answer phone calls and emails during the busy summer season.
  • Hot dogs and Ham(veggie)burgers, oh my!Save the date for the annual OEM staff picnic on August 9.
  • New Tools. The Slate and Salesforce CRM implementations are moving full speed ahead. We will launch our first items in Slate, the Preview events and request for information forms, in late June.
  • Welcome WeekAlthough students can move in as early as Sunday, August 13 and participate in Experience IU, the official move-in day is Wednesday the 16th. And that means the start of Welcome Week as well! Optional and required events, including group career advising with University Division students, the induction ceremony, CultureFest, and more will help students find their IU crew and get acquainted with campus. Everyone is invited to participate in Welcome Week events, especially Traditions and Spirit of IU happening Friday, August 18. Check out the most current Welcome Week schedule on the FYE app.
